The Festival Season 2018


Side-stepping the scorching sun, freak storms, and a smatter of cancellations, the 2018 festival season saw record numbers for some events. But with competition fiercer than ever, eye-watering artist fees, and audience expectations rising, the business of festivals gets no easier annually.

So behind the PR-headlines, how was 2018 really? Across the international festival scene, what were the key lessons learnt, the new genres and generations engaged, and the best examples of new and original ideas that are driving the business forward? Coda’s Clementine Bunel leads an all-star cast to discuss the current state of play.

Josh Javor is an agent at X-Ray Touring, he works on a large roster of artists that includes new and developing acts as well as stadium artists and festival headliners. He works for Steve Strange and together they guide the live careers for a diverse range of acts such as Coldplay, Eminem, Queens of the Stone Age, Chance the Rapper, Snow Patrol, Kodaline, Alice in Chains, Phoebe Bridgers, The Charlatans, Seasick Steve, Modest Mouse, The Internet, Jimmy Eat World, Lil Uzi Vert, Black Honey and Mini Mansions.

Ide Koffeman, Mojo Concerts (NL)
Ide Koffeman is Festival Director for Down The Rabbit Hole festival, one of the latest pearls in the Mojo festival family in The Netherlands.

Started out in 2014 as a 3 stage festival in a stunning setting at the lake in Groene Heuvels, Nijmegen. In 2018 the festival sold out far in advance, doing 35.000 weekend tix and presenting act such as Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Queens Of The Stone Age, David Byrne, Anderson .Paak, Fever Ray, Franz Ferdinand, Jorja Smith a.m.o. The festival aims for a good mix of new and established talent on and offstage and pays a lot of attention to arts, decoration, setting, secret stages, hidden fields, weird performance art and good food. This year Down The Rabbit Hole also won the award for Best Medium-Sized Festival at the European Festival Awards. Next year DTRH will take place July 5,6,7.
